Establish a network for sharing information on fishery resources management
Context and project description
In addition to the liaison group created to promote the sharing of expertise between researchers and the departments involved with fishery resources, a much larger network to promote discussions between all of the players in the fishing domain in Quebec will be created. With a flexible structure, this network will establish dialogue on the most current issues affecting fishing, such as ecocertification, traceability, industry rationalization, product marketing, sustainable fishing and resource conservation tools.
It will act as a large forum with respect to the representativeness of the participants, which will allow for discussions between groups that do not currently have a forum for discussion. For example, the network could bring together representatives from organizations of fishers and aquaculturists, departments and agencies involved in the management of fishery resources, universities and research centres, food supply chains, financial institutions, processors and exporters.
Results
As planned, a liaison committee (or group) was set up in 2015 to promote cooperation and share information about the marine fisheries in Quebec. Some of its members are from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and there are 20 members representing the industry, including fishermen’s associations and Aboriginal groups.
For more information about the liaison committee, visit the DFO website.
