Canada Wildlife Act
The Canada Wildlife Act applies to any animal, plant or other organism belonging to a specie that is wild by nature or that is not easily distinguishable from such a specie; and the habitat of any such animal, plant or other organism. This Act protects wildlife and important wildlife habitat through the creation, management and conservation of wildlife areas dedicated to research, conservation and public education.
For example, eight national wildlife reserves have been designated along the St. Lawrence:
- Cap-Tourmente National Wildlife Area
- Îles-de-Contrecoeur National Wildlife Area
- Îles-de-la-Paix National Wildlife Area (counties of Châteauguay and Beauharnois)
- Lac-Saint-Francis National Wildlife Area
- Pointe-de-l’Est National Wildlife Area (County of Bonaventure, Municipality de Grosse-Île, Îles-de-la-Madeleine
- Baie-de-l'Isle-Verte National Wildlife Area
- Îles-de-l’Estuaire National Wildlife Area (Rivière-du-Loup, Bic-Rimouski region)
- Pointe-au-Père National Wildlife Area
The Wildlife Area Regulations, paragraph 3(1), specify especially that “no person shall, in any wildlife area (…) disturb or remove any soil, sand, gravel or other material, or dump or deposit any rubbish, waste material or substance that would degrade or alter the quality of the environment, or hunt, fish, camp or set a fire, unless he does so under and in accordance with a permit issued by the Minister [of the Environment], pursuant to section 4 [of the Regulation].”
